IAEA asks India to account for radioactive material accident

IAEA asks India to account for radioactive material accident
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) demanded explanation from Indiafor a fatal accident involving radioactive material and offered its help in Vienna on Saturday, Xinhua reported.

According to the Austrian Press Agency (APA), an Indian scrap dealer died of radioactive poisoning after he dismantled a plant from a chemistry laboratory of theUniversity of Delhi.

Another seven workers also received medical treatment due to radiation, Indian police said.

The IAEA spokesman Marc Vidricaire said that the Indian authorities should have ensured the security of radioactive material.

This case showed again that the disposal of hazardous material was usually uncontrolled in India. Thus, chemicals and radioactive waste were sold to scrap dealers, the spokesman said.
